Telephone Paintings

In 1922, László Moholy-Nagy orders by telephone from a sign factory five paintings in porcelain enamel. The precise position of the shapes is transmitted by using graph paper (like a bitmap grid) and the factory's color chart.

"In 1922 I ordered by telephone from a sign factory five paintings in porcelain enamel. I had the factory's color chart before me and I sketched my paintings on graph paper. At the other end of the telephone the factory supervisor had the same kind of paper, divided into squares. He took down the dictated shapes in the correct position. (It was like playing chess by correspondence.) One of the pictures was delivered in three different sizes, so that I could study the subtle differences in the color relations caused by the enlargement and reduction."

En 1922, Mogoly-Nagy (27 ans) commande par téléphone cinq tableaux en porcelaine émaillée à une usine d’enseignes. Il a devant les yeux les échantillons de couleurs de l’usine et esquisse ses peintures sur du papier millimétré. À l’autre bout du fil, le fabricant, qui a devant lui une feuille identique, inscrit les formes dictées par Moholy-Nagy dans les cases correspondant à leur position. L’un des tableaux a été livré en trois tailles différentes, afin que Moholy-Nagy puisse étudier les différences de relations de couleurs résultant de l’agrandissement ou, au contraire, de la réduction.
L’enjeu d’une telle expérience semble clair: d’une part, rendre hommage à l’univers mécanique et technologique qui avait séduit Moholy-Nagy dès son arrivée à Berlin; d’autre part, et en écho aux thèses ultérieures de Walter Benjamin, prouver qu’à l’âge industriel les clivages art/non art, artisanat/production mécanisée, ne sont plus pertinents, et qu’il est temps de procéder à un véritable remaniement conceptuel.
