In 1994 I was artist-in-residence at the Western Front in Vancouver, where I used low-power "pirate" television transmitters and ISDN videoconferencing to create a live online and open-source video-mixing network called TV Freenet. It would be nearly ten years before systems such as Waag Society's Keyworx technology, Bittorrent, and YouTube made this vision a reality on the Internet today.

My first webpages were uploaded in early 1994 on server //ping.at/. 1994/1995 Public Netbase and soon afterwards The Thing network were offering free possibilities for artist to publish their projects. Both servers are no longer accessible - The Thing was commercialized in 2000 (links still work), Netbase closed its service in 2004.

February 5: A mortar explodes in Sarajevo's central market; 68 people killed. The city is under siege since 22 months.

February 28: NATO jets shoot down four Serb aircraftover central Bosnia; this is the alliance's first use of force since it was founded in 1949.

june 1994: Sonar festival, Barcelona (live performance by Atom Heart at Apolo on June 2).
june 1994: opening of the Internet project SERVICE AREA a.i. presented at Ars Electronica.
july 1994: I hear an amazing live performance by Atom Heart during the “Interference Festival” at Globus in Berlin, July 2, 1994 [at 7:00am].
November: "Before and After Ambient" - inaugural event of the new Electronic Cafe at The Kitchen, New York (feat. a tele-concert by The Future Sound of London).
Electronic Cafe International presents "Three Cities", a "multimedia tele-concert (involving Morton Subotnick, David Rosenboom, Steina Vasulka with Leo Smith and J.B. Floyd).


December: Russian troops enter Chechnya, beginning of the first chechnyan war.
Public release of Netscape.

En 94, Praxis œuvre dans une techno hard, industrielle et mature depuis déjà deux ans. En France Epiteth, Radikal Groov, Gangstar Toons Industrie poussent tout juste leurs premiers cris hors normes. Et même d’Allemagne nous parviennent presque simultanément les premiers jets de Napalm. À Vienne, c’est l’année de naissance de Mego.
