January: Stewart Brand organises the Trips Festival. In March, he creates the Whole Earth button (it read: "Why Haven't We Seen a Photograph of the Whole Earth Yet?")

Exposition: «Nine Evenings: Theater and Engineering» au 96th Regiment, New York. Organisé par Billy Klüver et EAT. Performances en technique mixte de 10 artistes en collaboration avec 40 ingénieurs. In 1966 Robert Ashley and Gordon Mumma joined forces with David Behrman and Alvin Lucier to create one of the most influential live electronic performance ensembles, the Sonic Arts Union.

The Youth International Party, a highly theatrical political party (whose adherents were known as Yippies), is established in the United States.

Joseph Weizenbaum publishes a simple computer program called ELIZA which demonstrates natural language processing by engaging humans into a conversation resembling that with an empathic psychologist.
