Planetary Network

PLANETARY NETWORK was a world-wide telecommunications project in the context of LABORATORIO UBIQUA, the Technology and Informatics section of the 42nd Venice Biennale, 1986 (organised by Roy Ascott, Tommaso Trini))).

"PLANETARY NETWORK summed up all the low-tech telecommunications projects by artists since 1979. I organised the network on ARTEX for the last time. It was also the last comprehensive, multi-media, global network project. The networking of Personal Computers in BBSs and the increasing presence of FAX and other telephone peripherals in offices and homes made ARTEX and large-scale telecomm projects superfluous. (...) "Aus diesem Grunde hat das UBIQUA-Laboratorium als Interface zum Planetarischen Netzwerk an der Biennale Venedig 1986 in Wirklichkeit die Ausstellung von ihrer eher elitären, zentralisierten und exklusiven Domäne herausgerissen und sie über die gesamte Oberfläche des Planeten verbreitet (...). In diesem Sinne wurde eine ganze Reihe interaktiver Kommunikationsmedien eingesetzt - electronic mail, Computerkonferenzen, Videotext, slow-scan TV ebenso wie der Austausch von Computerbildern. Das Laboratoriumm benutzte darüber hinaus auch Interfaces, die von Videodiscs, digitalem Klang, Paint-Systemen und kybernetisch-responsiven Strukturen und Environments bedient wurden."
